5 Questions Answered About MonaLisa Touch

5 Questions Answered About MonaLisa Touch

MonaLisa Touch is a Health Canada approved treatment for the genitourinary symptoms of menopause.

In this post, Dr. Gregory Davies answers 5 of the most common questions he is asked about the treatment.

Question 1: Is the treatment safe?

Dr. Davies Says:

Mona Lisa Touch is a safe procedure. It’s non-surgical and non-hormonal. Like any treatment, there are some minor complications that can happen. Rarely, some women can have a bit of bleeding or spotting. It’s not unusual that in the first day or two afterwards that women will have a sensation like having a UTI. That’s not uncommon at all. I think the reason that happens is that the bladder is a little bit irritated because of the healing response coming into the tissues around the bladder. That goes away in a very short period of time. There have never been any serious side effects reported from the MonaLisa Touch treatment, and it is Health Canada Approved.

Question 2: Does the treatment hurt?

Dr. Davies Says:

Most women tell me that they feel “vibration” during the vaginal portion of the treatment. It’s not painful, it doesn’t feel anything worse than feeling some sense of vibration, like a hum. During the vulvar treatment, we do use a numbing gel to reduce the feeling of vibration and slight electrical sensation. No-one describes it as painful, but everyone’s sensation is different.

Question 3: How long does treatment take?

Dr. Davies Says:

It’s important to understand that you’re in the examination chair for no more than 5-10 minutes. The time to treat the vagina is between 1-2 minutes, and the vulvar treatment also takes 1-2 minutes. The entire treatment time will include some preparation time, going over your health questionnaire and answering any questions, and making sure you are comfortable. Overall, it is a 30 minute visit to our clinic.

Question 4: What will I feel after the procedure?

Dr. Davies Says:

After the treatment, many women will feel some warmth in the area of the treatment, so we give them a cool pad to wear. It lasts about 30-60 minutes, and after that there are usually no further symptoms. Some women will have a mild feeling of irritation, and we provide petroleum jelly to apply to the area. When I call women the day after the procedure, almost everyone talks about just having the mild sense of warmth, which goes away quite quickly.

Question 5: What is the recovery process like?

Dr. Davies Says:

After my wife had her treatment, she rode her bike home! You don’t need to clear your schedule at all, in fact you can immediately return to your normal activities, whether that is cycling, going to yoga, or heading back to work. You don’t need to feel like there is any downtime associated with this treatment!

For a couple of days after the treatment you may feel a sensation like you have a UTI, but this sensation is just an irritation and it will pass. In my experience, it occurs amongst 50% of women.

In some rare cases there may be some temporary bleeding or spotting which goes away quickly, but there have never been any serious side effects reported from the MonaLisa Touch treatment.
